Iowans gathered at the Japanese Bell on the grounds of the Iowa Capitol to mark the 77th anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki:
A Remembrance and a Commitment.
AFSC Iowa retiree Kathleen McQuillen, now director of Catholic Peace Ministry, organized the event. Former AFSC Regional Director Eloise Cranke read information about the Japanese Bell.
Aug. 6 and 9, 2022 marks 77 years since the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians. This is a horror we must never forget – or repeat.
With music, poetry, and words of recommitment, we recalled and grieved the unfolding of the nuclear age, the horrendous cost to the people of Japan, and the continuing costs and threats to people all over the globe. We will renew, to our children and future generations, our commitment of “Never Again.”
AFSC Midwest Region was one of several co-sponsors of this event.
