The City of West Des Moines (Iowa) Human Rights Commission and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) hosted a Candlelight Vigil for Ukraine at the Jamie Hurd Amphitheater by City Hall.
The event featured a performance of “Prayer for Ukraine” by the Valley High School Vocal Music Program.
The City Council unanimously passed a proclamation declaring March 24 as a Day of Solidarity with Ukraine.
Speakers at the event included Mayor Russ Trimble, Councilmember Renee Hardman, DEI Director Audrey Kennis, and WDM Human Rights Commissioner Rev. Milton Cole-Duvall. In addition, Valley High School students Matthew Zhuravlov and Marharyta Tataryna, both from Ukraine, spoke.
