On the 76th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Iowans gather at the Japanese Bell on the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol for a ceremony of remembrance. The ceremony included music, prayer, a reading of the proclamation from the Mayor of Hiroshima, the sharing of an Iranian perspective, the work of Global Zero, and the stories of the Japanese Bell at the Capitol and another Japanese bell. Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie read a statement on behalf of Mayors for Peace.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, people processed to the Japanese Bell where they laid flowers and rang the bell in memory of those who were killed and injured in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was shared in appreciation of that company’s recent action in support of Palestinian human rights. AFSC Midwest Region was one of 16 groups co-sponsoring the event.
