Around 75 Iowans gathered at the Japanese Bell on the Iowa State Capitol grounds for an annual vigil -- this year entitled, "Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Choosing a Future of Peace." Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, a leader in Mayors for Peace, gave the welcoming. The keynote was given by Dr. Maureen McCue of the Iowa Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Morgan Rivers led people in a Dance of Universal Peace. The vigil was organized by Catholic Peace Ministry and co-sponsored by a number of groups.
